Examination of Conscience

Our Duties Toward God

In Thought:  Have I willfully doubted even one article of Faith? Did I despair of God's goodness? Was I willfully distracted at prayer? Did I strive to advance in virtue? Did I form and keep a good intention during the day and ask God's help in temptation?
In Word:   Did I take the name of God in vain? Did I curse or sue profane words? Did I say my daily prayers?
In Deed:   Have I skipped my Sunday prayers? Did I buy or sell on Sundays, or do unnecessary servile work? Did I participate in sinful amusements?

Our Duties Toward Our Neighbor

In Thought:   Have I thought evil of others or judged rashly? Did I harbor sentiments of hatred, revenge, aversion, ill will or contempt? Did I envy my neighbor's temporal or spiritual welfare?
In Word:   Have I told lies to Injure my neighbor (calumny)? Have I been guilty of detraction? Did I excite others to anger? Did I command, consent or defend an evil action or foster evil by my silence?
In Deed:   Did I murmur or encourage discord? Did I take revenge? Have I injured another by taking or damaging his property? Have I contracted debts without the intention or means to repay them? Have I been willfully disobedient to parents or superiors?

Our Duties Toward Ourselves

In Thought:   Did I deliberately have thoughts of pride? Did I willfully have impure thoughts or desires? Have I refused to acknowledge my faults?
In Word:   Have I concealed my vices under the appearance of virtue? Have I been boastful, haughty and proud?
In Deed:   Have I read obscene or suggestive literature? Have I committed any act against holy purity? Did I misuse food, drink or drugs? Did I keep the laws of fast and abstinence? Did I contribute to the work of the Church? Have I fulfilled the duties of my state of life, or have I been lazy or neglectful though human respect?
